Step 2 focuses on the second skill needed for reading proficiency: phonics training. We start at the beginning with A, B, C, and D. These are the first three sounds of the 44 that are used in English. The remaining 41 sounds will follow in 11 more modules that comprise Step 2. Yes, it’s a big step with a lot of parts, but it’s necessary to get phonics to lock in for a new reader. Once a student “gets” phonics, the rest is much easier. This lesson also includes a number of important concepts, such as elision–how to glide one sound into the next, plus much more. Each of the twelve lessons in Step 2 include word lists, reading practice with controlled one-syllable vocabulary, sight words, and phonics rules and definitions. *Note: These modules are intended to be used with the video lessons at SoundEnglish.org, but they can be used by themselves.
