Step 2.8 through Step 2.12 deal with the remaining vowel sounds, beginning with the long vowels. It is a “hump” for students to get over, since they have only been exposed to the short vowels. It can be frustrating, but it just takes practice and patience. It helps that the sound of long vowel is the same as the letter name. Word lists include all 36 sounds so far; the same is true for the reading practice. The concepts introduced in this step include context, italics, tone, and the heteronym.
